The Triangle: Balancing Life’s Three Fundamental Aspects

Here we go with random weird theories I promised when I started this blog. In our quest for a fulfilling life, I came to believe that balance is key. I remember my mom always telling me “balance is everything in life” and while there might been some situation where this is not true, I really think she was onto something with this. This article introduces a concept I’ve come to form in my head over the past decade or so: I call it “the Triangle Theory” (…not really, but I had to give this blog post a name). It’s about the three main critical aspects of our lives: the physical, the mental & intellectual, and lastly our relationships with the rest of the world. By understanding, balancing and nurturing each corner of this triangle, we pave the way for happiness, meaning, and enjoyment in life. So let me go into the details a bit more and explain to you what I mean by those 3 aspects of our lives:

The Three Corners of the Triangle

The Physical Aspect: This is the foundation of our being and is the basis of the triangle: if you don’t take care of your body, it’s going to be difficult to care about the 2 others aspects. Caring for your body through proper nutrition, exercise, and rest is not just a duty but a necessity. When we are physically fit and healthy, we are more equipped to explore and interact with the world around us. It’s about more than just fitness; it’s about respecting and maintaining the vessel that carries us through life. It includes sports, or at least some way to get moving, nutrition, sleep and everything else needed to keep yourself healthy on the physical side.

The Mental & Intellectual Aspect: Our mind is the engine of our existence. It’s where ideas form, where problems are solved, and where creativity blooms. Nurturing our mental health and continuously seeking knowledge and wisdom allows us to grow and adapt. Whether through reading, learning or engaging in thoughtful discussion, expanding our intellectual horizons is crucial for a well-rounded life. For me, this includes also my work, as it’s a big part of my life and is challenging me intellectually every day. It can also be going back to university to extend your knowledge, learning new stuff on a regular basis or taking care of your mental health. Finnaly, through learning, discussions and expending your horizon, this includes the spiritual aspect of your life as well, however this might be for you.

Your relationship with World around you: last but not least, your interaction with the World is a crucial part of the triangle. No individual is an island and our connection with family, friends, society, and nature is vital. These relationships provide us with perspective, support, and a sense of belonging. Engaging with the world around us enriches our lives and helps us understand our place in the larger tapestry of existence. Whether it’s becoming a good parent, nurturing relationships that matter, or having a positive impact on the world through any mean, this part of the triangle is key to your fulfilment and happiness.

Finding Your Balance

While it can be beneficial to focus on one aspect at times, the ultimate goal is to cultivate all three continuously. Like a triangle, if one side is too short or too long, the shape loses its symmetry. Similarly, when we neglect one aspect of our lives, the others are affected, and our balance is disrupted. I tend to believe that having a strong base in the first 2 aspects are critical to be able to thrive in the 3rd one (relationship with others). But life is dynamic, and there will be times when one aspect demands more attention. During a health crisis, focusing on the physical is natural. Or when I became a dad, my focus was on my family, letting go (maybe too much) the physical aspect of the triangle for some time. The key is to recognize these are temporary focuses that contribute to a longer-term balance.

The Path to Happiness, Meaning, and Enjoyment

By always keeping the Triangle in mind, we create a self-sustaining cycle of growth and fulfillment. As we develop one corner, we discover that it supports and enhances the others. Physical health boosts our mental capacity; a sharp mind fosters deeper relationships; and meaningful connections encourage us to take better care of ourselves and our community.

The Triangle Theory is about recognizing the interconnectedness of our physical, mental, and social beings. By striving for balance, we don’t just exist; we thrive. As you reflect on your life’s triangle, consider which area might need more attention and which is currently flourishing. Remember, the journey to balance is ongoing and ever-evolving. Here’s to finding your harmony within the Triangle.
